How Did You Find HR?

Most people do not choose HR at eighteen. HR chooses them later – quietly, unexpectedly – through moments that reveal who they really are. On several occasions, I have been asked, What made you choose HR?

I invite you to reflect – What was the moment, the conversation, the experience that shaped your decision?

For me, that moment came long before I knew what Human Resources was.

I heard my father cry after he was laid off. I remember feeling older than my years, standing there and understanding the barrier he would face. He had not graduated high school. English was his second language. His options were limited, and I worried for him in a way a child should never have to. At the same time, I understood that as a recent high school graduate, I had more choices than he did. That realization stayed with me. It shaped how I see fairness, stability, and the human cost behind every decision.

I did not know it then, but that moment was the beginning of my HR story.

As I grew older, I noticed people trusted me with their worries, their conflicts, their questions. I became the person others sought out when something felt uncertain or uncomfortable. I realized that this was not random. This is who I was. HR chose me.

But this is not just about my story. It is about yours.

Every HR professional has an origin moment. Sometimes it is dramatic. Sometimes it is quiet. Sometimes it is accidental. Sometimes it is a calling. It teaches us something about why we do this work.
